Daily History Games Like Wordle: 12 to Play Every Morning

Twelve daily history puzzles in the spirit of Wordle, grouped by what they test: place and year, the year alone, the map, or famous people.

· 4 min read

Wordle made the daily puzzle a habit: one short game, the same for everyone, and a result you can share. History fans picked up the format quickly, and now there's a daily game for almost every way of testing what you know.

The twelve below are grouped by the question they ask. If you want a morning routine, pick one from each of the first three groups. It takes about ten minutes.

We make Where&When, and it's included. Details were checked in September 2026.

Where and when: place and year together

These are the richest daily games. Each round asks you to pin a location and name a year.

WhenTaken

WhenTaken · web · real photographs

Five photographs a day. For each one you drop a pin and set the year it was taken, and your rounds add up to a score out of 1,000. Missed a day? The archive lets you catch up.

TimeGuessr Daily

TimeGuessr · web, iPhone, Android · real photographs

The daily mode of the genre's biggest game gives everyone the same set of historical photographs to place and date, with a global leaderboard. Once you're done, there's a random mode and community-made games.

Where&When Daily Challenge

Where&When · iPhone · AI-generated scenes of real events

Five events a day, the same for every player. Each round shows an illustrated scene with no caption, like a Viking raid, a volcanic eruption or a revolution. You have 60 seconds to pin the place and enter the year. After each guess, you learn what the event was and why it mattered. It keeps streaks and can send an evening reminder so you don't lose one.

This is the pick if you want your daily game to reach back before photography.

WenWare

WenWare · web · AI-generated panorama

The minimalist option: a single AI-generated historical scene a day, 60 seconds to pin it and set the year, and an emoji grid to share. It went viral in 2026.

EraGuessr Daily

EraGuessr · web · AI-generated 360° panoramas

A daily historical panorama you can look around before pinning the map and setting a year. It's free with no signup, and there's multiplayer if you want more after the daily.

The year alone

These games take the map away and test your sense of chronology.

Chronophoto Daily

Chronophoto · web · real photographs

Five photographs, one slider, up to 1,000 points each. It's the best daily training for dating an image by its details.

Whendle

Whendle · iPhone · text clues

Whendle picks one year between 1900 and 2026, then reveals five events from it, starting with the most obscure. You can guess after each clue. A white square means you're in the right decade, and yellow means you're one year out.

Yeardle

Yeardle · web · text clues

You start with three events that all happened in the same year and have eight tries to find it.

Jaardle

Jaardle · web · text clues

One historic event and six tries to name the year it happened.

Past Puzzle

Past Puzzle · iPhone · text clues

Four historical events, one year to find. The puzzle changes at midnight.

The map

MapTap

MapTap · iPhone · 3D globe

Five places a day, each tied to something that happened on that date in history, which you tap on a 3D globe. Each location comes with a short story. It doesn't ask for the year, but it's one of the most popular daily history-and-geography apps on iPhone.

Famous people

Historydle

Historydle · web · clues, quotes and portraits

Identify a famous historical figure from a series of clues, quotes and portraits. It's a good change of pace from the place-and-date games.

A ten-minute morning routine

  1. Warm up with the year (2 minutes). Whendle or Jaardle gets your sense of chronology going without any pictures.
  2. Place and year (5 minutes). Play one of WhenTaken, TimeGuessr or the Where&When Daily Challenge. Rotate between photo-based and event-based games so you practice both kinds of clue.
  3. Finish on the map (2 minutes). MapTap, or WenWare if you want one more where-and-when round.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Wordle for history?

Several. Yeardle, Jaardle and Whendle use Wordle's guess-and-feedback format with years instead of words. WhenTaken, TimeGuessr and Where&When add a map, so you guess the place as well.

What's the best daily history game on iPhone?

For place and year, Where&When and TimeGuessr both have native apps with a daily mode. For year-only puzzles, try Whendle. For the map, try MapTap. More in the best history guessing games for iPhone.

Can I play past daily puzzles?

Some games keep archives. WhenTaken, for example, has one. Others, like WenWare, are strictly one round a day.
