Is There a Free GeoGuessr App for iPhone?
GeoGuessr has an official iPhone app, but full access needs a subscription. Here's what's free, and which free alternatives are actually good.
· 5 min read
Short version: yes, GeoGuessr has an official iPhone app, and yes, it's free to download — but not free to play properly. A subscription unlocks most of what people mean by "playing GeoGuessr."
If that's not what you wanted to hear, the good news is that the free alternatives on iPhone have gotten genuinely good, and one of them has no paywall at all.
We make Where&When, one of the apps below. Everything here was checked in September 2026.
What you actually get in the free GeoGuessr app
GeoGuessr is on the App Store with over 31,000 ratings, and it's free to download. Its own listing is refreshingly direct about the limits:
A subscription is required for full access to GeoGuessr, including maps, game modes, Multiplayer, and competitive features. GeoGuessr is free to download and offers some gameplay for free.
So the split is roughly:
| Free | Subscription | |
|---|---|---|
| Download the app | Yes | Yes |
| Some gameplay | Yes | Yes |
| Daily Challenge | Yes | Yes |
| Full map library | No | Yes |
| Game modes | Limited | Yes |
| Duels and Battle Royale | No | Yes |
| Ranked competitive play | No | Yes |
Your account carries between the app and the website, so a subscription isn't a second purchase for mobile.
Is it worth it? If Street View guessing is your main hobby, probably — nothing else has the same map coverage or competitive scene. If you play a few rounds a week, you're paying for capacity you won't use, and the alternatives below will serve you better.
The free alternatives worth installing
WorldGuessr — the closest free equivalent
WorldGuessr is the one to try first. It's the same core game — dropped into Street View, read your surroundings, pin the map — and its App Store listing promises "no paywall, no play limits, and no catch."
What's striking is how much of GeoGuessr's paid tier it gives away:
- Ranked Duels with ELO and a global leaderboard
- Unranked Duels for low-pressure head-to-head rounds
- Private Party Games — your own room, custom games, up to 200 players
- A friends list and rematches
It's a smaller app with a much smaller player base, so ranked queues are quieter and the polish isn't the same. But for "I want to play GeoGuessr with my friends without anyone paying," it is the answer.
Where&When — if you'd rather guess when
Where&When is our free iPhone game, and it's a deliberate step sideways rather than a clone. Each round shows an AI-generated scene of a real historical event with no caption. You pin where it happened and enter the year, scoring on both, inside a 60-second clock. The reveal names the event and tells you what happened.
Because the scenes are generated rather than photographed, the pool reaches from the 1st century to the 2020s, which is territory Street View can't cover by definition. There's a Daily Challenge, themed Topics, and a Tournament against a friend.
Trade-offs, plainly: iPhone only, no web version. The scenes are historical reconstructions, not archival photographs. Topics and Tournament need Sign in with Apple. And it's a history game — if what you love is spotting a country from its road markings, WorldGuessr is a better fit.
MapTap — geography as a daily habit
MapTap is free, has over 12,000 App Store ratings, and gives you five places a day tied to events that happened on today's date, tapped out on a 3D globe. No Street View, no timer pressure — it's a two-minute daily rather than a session. The App Store lists it under Education, which is a fair description.
How they compare
| App | Free to play fully | Street View | Asks for a year | Multiplayer | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GeoGuessr | No — subscription | Yes | No | Subscription only | Web, iPhone, Android |
| WorldGuessr | Yes | Yes | No | Yes, free | Web, iPhone, Android |
| Where&When | Yes | No — AI scenes of events | Yes | Friend challenges | iPhone |
| MapTap | Yes | No — globe | No | No | iPhone |
Which one should you install?
- You want GeoGuessr, minus the bill: WorldGuessr.
- You want to play with friends tonight and nobody's subscribing: WorldGuessr's private party rooms, or Where&When's Tournament if you'd rather guess history than streets.
- You want a short daily thing: MapTap, or Where&When's Daily Challenge.
- You're deep in it and play most days: pay for GeoGuessr. The map library and the competitive ladder are the product.
A note on "free GeoGuessr" sites
Searching for free GeoGuessr turns up a lot of browser clones. Some are real projects with active communities. Others are thin wrappers built to run ads against someone else's imagery, and they tend to break when Street View terms change.
The App Store is the safer route on iPhone: an app that's there under its own name, with ratings and an update history, is a much better bet than a site you've never heard of.
Frequently asked questions
Does GeoGuessr have an official app?
Yes, on both iPhone and Android. It's free to download and offers some free gameplay, but full access to maps, game modes and multiplayer needs a subscription. Your account works across the app and the website.
Can you play GeoGuessr for free?
Partly. You can download it and play some rounds, including the Daily Challenge, without paying. The map library, the full set of modes, Duels, Battle Royale and ranked play are behind the subscription.
What is the best free GeoGuessr alternative on iPhone?
WorldGuessr, if you want the same Street View game with no paywall — it includes ranked duels and private party rooms for up to 200 players at no cost. If you'd rather guess when something happened as well as where, try Where&When.
Is there a GeoGuessr for history?
That's a whole genre now — games that ask for a year as well as a place. We compare seven of them in GeoGuessr for history, and cover the iPhone ones specifically in the best history guessing games for iPhone.
